4 Skincare Ingredients to prevent maskne
Maskne is the newest trend that everybody hates, but is here to stay…at least until our masks-wearing days go bye-bye! This wonderful acne phenomenon (not) occurs as a result of irritation from a face mask.
The combination of dirt, oil, sweat, dry skin etc. can lead to acne breakouts, even if you typically do not have issues with acne. Here are 4 ingredients you can add to your skincare regimen to help prevent or lessen your occurrence of maskne breakout.
1. Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid sounds as if it would be a harsh ingredient, but it actually can be found naturally in your skin. It is well known for alleviating dry skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s main function is to retain water and keep your skin lubricated, which can help soothe redness and dermatitis.
2. Retinol
Did you know that retinol is a derivative of vitamin A? This awesome vitamin helps to regulate oily skin which helps to reduce breakouts, voila!! This is a powerful ingredient that can cause irritation which is why I recommend retinal instead.
Retinal is the highest form of vitamin A you can get without a prescription and it will not cause the same amount of redness and dryness you can get from retinol. I have had customers who had to stop using retinol because it was so irritating to their skin, but they were able to use retinal without any issues.
3. Benzoyl Peroxide
If you have acne, then you have heard of benzoyl peroxide. This is a staple in the regimen of acne sufferers everywhere. This wonderful ingredient kills the bacteria underneath your skin, helps your pores to shed dead skin cells and helps to decrease excess sebum (oil).
This ingredient when purchased in the store typically comes at a 10% potency, but this amount of benzoyl peroxide can dry out your skin causing irritation, which brings us back to more break outs! I recommend using 2% or slightly higher with a skin preparator to eliminate the dryness and irritation.
4. Sulfur
Last, but not least, Sulfur. The last two ingredients make me feel as though I am in science class and not writing a blog about skin!! Sulfur helps to dry out your skin of excess sebum as well as unclog your pores. Using a product with sulfur at least once a week is ideal.
Well, there you have it! These 4 ingredients should be staples in your cabinet as we enter this new season of mask wear. For more tips check out my blog on maskne for practical ways to prevent maskne and check out the list of products I recommend below.
