3 Things Female Entrepreneurs Need to Get Over
3 Things Female Entrepreneurs Need to Get Over
I love being a female entrepreneur, but let me tell you, the road has not been an easy one. Before I get started, let me quickly tell you about my journey. I am a wife, mother of 3 boys, singer, pianist, and ministry leader. My first experience as an entrepreneur was representing Cutco and Vector Marketing. If you have not heard of Cutco and Vector Marketing, they are a US company that sells high-quality knives. At the tender age of 18, I began my first direct selling business…selling knives…in Miami. Needless to say, my parents were not too keen on a young lady selling knives in stranger’s houses in the Miami area. I look back and wonder what in the world was I thinking!!!!
Fast forward to a young woman married and starting a family. I taught music in the public school system for four years and then left after having my first son. I wanted to be there for my son, so I opened my home music studio. I taught music privately prior to this because honestly, teachers do not make enough money to live on, it is very sad but very true. But after having my son, I did not want to travel and wanted to stay close home. My Music Studio was the first business that I created on my terms and I loved every minute of it. It was easy and not very challenging (it was totally in my comfort zone) and I learned so much from running my home studio fifteen years.
Now here we are in 2020 and I have stepped into the scary world of true entrepreneurship and growth. Teaching music was very easy for me, but I always had the desire to perform. However, I did not believe I was good enough to go after the things I wanted because I believed that horrible lie. I wasted years and missed tons of opportunities because I did not believe I was good enough. So ladies, the first thing you need to get over is that negative mindset!!!! And you know what? We are our own worst enemy! I had many people who applauded me for my voice, who complimented me left and right and I still did not believe I was good enough to perform. How crazy is that? Surround yourself with reminders of truth and start each morning with a routine that gets your mindset in the correct place. I am a woman of faith and I begin each morning with prayer and devotions. One of my prayers is a gratitude prayer. Being thankful for all the blessings that you have is a great way to start your day with a positive mindset. Whenever I have a negative thought enter my mind, I go back to scriptures or positive quotes to sucker-punch that bad boy right out of my thoughts.
The second thing you need to get over is your desire to be perfect. As a musician, I am blessed and cursed with the desire to do things perfectly. You practice and learn, practice, and learn and then practice again until you can’t make a mistake. It is in our DNA! Sure perfectionism is great for a musician but not for being an entrepreneur. As a skin care consultant, the way I need to run my business is slightly different from my performance business. Don’t get me wrong the basics of a good business transfer to any business, but there are aspects of being a skincare consultant that force me to jump totally out of my comfort zone. Somethings are so scary to me, like talking on the phone. I can sing on stage, but picking up the phone terrifies me because I want to say the right things. I hesitate posting on social media or uploading a YouTube video because I have read so many books, gone through so many classes, and watched so many videos on the right and wrong way to do things that I want my content to be perfect. I don’t want to do something halfway, I want to do it right the first time. Don’t you hate not knowing how to do something? Don’t you want to just do it right the first time? Well, being an entrepreneur means you don’t wait for the perfect time to do it, you just do it and you do it now! So kick perfectionism to the curb and know that the more you do something the better you will become!
The last thing we need to get over is the feeling of overwhelm. Being a wife, mom and entrepreneur can feel very overwhelming at times. You can feel as though you are being pulled in 5 different directions at the same time and the feeling of overwhelm can easily set in. The best way to fight the feeling of overwhelm is to create a routine for your self that encompasses all of your responsibilities and then give yourself grace if you get off of your routine from time to time. Try different tools and ways to organize your business and private life. Finding the right tools for you may take some trial and error, but it is very well worth it in the end. Overwhelm is a choice, so prioritize today the things that are of importance to you and save the rest for tomorrow. Organize and make a plan!
It is truly exciting to see so many women stepping into the world of entrepreneurship and creating businesses on their own terms.
You Go Girl!
You have what it takes to make it and don’t let anyone, especially yourself, tell you otherwise. Listen to your gut even if it is scary! If you are not doing scary things in your business then you are not growing! As you get started or try new things, remember you do not have to do everything perfectly. Just start and be willing to learn, grow, and change as you move your business forward. And lastly, don’t choose overwhelm. Female entrepreneurs have so many responsibilities and it is easy to choose the road to overwhelm and stop being productive because we just don’t know where to start. Organization and prioritization combined with grace is the key.
I wish you all the best on your entrepreneurship journey and if I can be of any help, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
